History of The Abbott

Meet Julius Sterling Morton

The Morton Suite is named in honor of Julius Sterling Morton (1832–1902), a Nebraska statesman, writer, and environmental visionary best known as the founder of Arbor Day. Morton was deeply committed to agricultural and conservation efforts, believing in the power of tree planting and sustainable stewardship long before it became a national priority.

As Secretary of Agriculture under President Grover Cleveland, he championed policies that promoted reforestation and the responsible use of natural resources. His legacy lives on through generations of conservationists and the enduring spirit of Arbor Day.

Staying in The Morton Suite is a tribute to his lasting contributions to public service, education, and the preservation of our natural world.
